President's Message

by Barry Kahn, President - Illinois Chapter

From the Summer 2004 issue of Hopes & Dreams, newsletter of the Illinois Chapter, Huntington's Disease Society of America.

It is hard to believe we are once again nearing the end of our fiscal year (September 30, 2004). We have so much to look forward to and to be thankful for.

As I stated in our last newsletter, Chicago is one of five (5) cities being considered for a Center of Excellence. The other four (4) are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Indianapolis and Tampa. We hope that we will be one of three (3) chosen this year. It would certainly be a blessing for our HD patients and their families.

I want to thank all of you who contributed to our Center of Excellence Challenge. Through your donations we raised the monies required for the initial phase of the Center. It is now up to the Center of Excellence Committee to determine which three cities should receive the COE designation. The Board of Directors confirms their choices at the October 2004 Board of Directors meeting. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

The Illinois Chapter, at its June 23, 2004 Board Meeting, voted to become a part of HDSAs upper Midwest Region. This basically means that we will have more resources available to us and a more concentrated and coordinated effort to have all of our endeavors highly successful.

We are looking forward to the successful completion of this fiscal year with two wonderful fundraising events scheduled our golf outing is set for August 1, 2004, and our Day at the Races on September 12, 2004. There are flyers and registration forms included in this newsletter. Please help make these events successful. As you know, the monies raised are for a great cause, making this the Last Generation with HD.
